In the tradition of countless Jewish communities around the world, Congregation Beth Shalom’s Chevra Kaddisha provides ritual support from the moment of death through burial. The rabbi, as the usual first contact of the bereaved family, determines their wishes and coordinates with the Chevra Kaddisha chair. The Chevra Kaddisha’s volunteers are prepared to act as shomrim and to provide tahara (ritual washing of the body and preparation for burial). As well, the Chevra Kaddisha maintains a supply of kosher caskets and burial garments and coordinates the use of a local funeral parlor for its procedures.
Given the importance of Jewish ritual at the time of death, the Chevra Kaddisha’s services are available to any Jew, regardless of membership status.
